What is a mandala?

philosophy

Soma Mandala Yoga: A mandala is a symbol of the cosmos and the inner self. This name implies a practice that unfolds the self's connection to universal consciousness, inspired by the profound patterns and visions experienced in altered states.

A mandala represents the universe, the cosmos, and a map of the spiritual journey to enlightenment. They are a spiritual tool used in Buddhism and Hinduism for meditation and ritual, symbolizing a balanced and unified world or the palace of a deity. The creation and contemplation of a mandala can help achieve a state of mental and emotional balance and are also used to symbolize the impermanence of life.

Symbolic Representation

  • The universe: A mandala can be a symbolic diagram of the entire universe.

  • A deity's palace: Often, the center of a mandala represents the palace of a deity, surrounded by protective figures.

  • Spiritual journey: It can represent a spiritual map, guiding the observer from the outside world of distraction and illusion towards the center of truth.

  • Balance: The circular and square geometric design can represent a balanced state of body and mind.

  • Impermanence: In sand mandala traditions, the meticulous creation and eventual destruction of the artwork are used to symbolize the impermanence of all things.

Purpose and Use

  • Meditation and ritual: Mandalas are used in rituals and as a focus for meditation to help achieve spiritual enlightenment and a deeper understanding of reality.

  • Therapeutic use: They can be used as a form of art therapy to promote a sense of calm, comfort, and well-being.

  • Symbol of transformation: Creating or having a mandala can be a personal expression of a spiritual or inner transformation.
